Why We Encourage Our Team by Mapping Their Career Paths with the Malaysian Skills Certificate (SKM)

Career maps are written plans that outline where an employee is today, where they want to be, and what steps they’ll need to take to get from here to there. Rather than asking our candidates, we constantly remind ourselves to ask our employees where they see themselves in five years and how we can help them achieve their goals.

Some employees with underprivileged backgrounds simply don’t know what their career path should be. According to a report by Malaysiakini in 2020, the primary school dropout rate in Malaysia increased from 0.12% to 0.13%, while the dropout rate for secondary school students increased from 1.14% to 1.26% during the pandemic.

Where do these students go?
They may have an abstract idea of how they want to grow, but without a definitive plan, perhaps they’re not likely to achieve as such. This issue can result in job dissatisfaction, lower engagement and productivity, and also potential weakening.

Which is exactly why we’ve made an effort, and thus achieved recognition by the Departmentof Skills Development (JPK) in obtaining the certificate of the National Dual TrainingSystem (NDTS or SLDN) Accredited Center back in December 2020.

The two learning situations that are implemented in this program that we partake in include the actual workplace of practical training and also the training centre of theory and knowledge. Due to our new norm of building a remote working culture, conducting the training sessions online has not been a problem.

The NDTS program endorsed by the Malaysian Skills Certificate (SKM) shares the same main objectives as we do; to produce knowledge workers that possess three elements of competency which are Technical, Social and Humanitarian, and Methodologies and Living. It is known to administer a method based on an industry-driven training concept, which in our case, is security services.

Not only that this program benefits us as employers by saving cost and time in retraining employees and improving quality and productivity, but the NDTS program holds major importance to our employees by providing clear task-scope information, assisting in career advancement, acting as a benchmark for job performance, and also helping our employees make the right decision in choosing their career paths.

Hence, even though some employees happen to not own a local highschool degree, RSS Security believes that everyone deserves a chance. With us, there will always be room to upskill our employees, and satisfy our training needs to be relevant and impactful to them as well.

Rolling Out the Pavement for Knowledge Appreciation

Rolling Out the Pavement for Knowledge Appreciation

Mr. Muhamad Fahmi Bin Hassan’s position as Head of Human Resources and Training is one that is particularly important at a time where RSS Security saw a steady growth in business development.

Prior to joining the team, Mr. Fahmi was proudly honored by the Navys as Leftenan Commander in 2013. When he came across an opportunity at RSS Security where he could utilize and grow his expertise and knowledge, Mr. Fahmi did not back down.

His highlighted skills in both main and electronic warfare have contributed a lot in his big undertakings that he oversees within the entire team. One of his biggest achievements that he had happily unlocked for the company was obtaining the SLDN-accredited centre certificate (Sijil latihan Dual Nasional), based on the National Occupational Skills Standard.

The credential does not only bring benefit to the company’s standards of operation, but it also assists staff in obtaining proper training for technical, social and humanities and methodology and learning.

His enthusiasm in gaining knowledge and building a culture at RSS Security that brings value to all staff and personnel does not stop in his own tracks. The people who work with Mr. Fahmi get to experience the joy in gaining knowledge and increase proficiency the same way he does.

RSS Security has developed well-trained people that have secure and successful careers, but it is those like Mr. Fahmi that are highly notable. He was able to prove that the power of knowledge never stops growing, even after achieving certain ranks in any career.

Living Proof that Age is Just a Number

Living Proof that Age is Just a Number

There can be a hundred people in the room, and 99 don’t believe in you, but one does. And that one is RSS Security Sdn. Bhd.

It is a common assumption that the security industry is difficult and dangerous, especially for older people. Hence it is perhaps best to be avoided among anyone ages 50 and above.

But in RSS Security, this is often not the case. Mr. Razali Bin Rahim is a great example who has shown that age is never a factor that determines one’s capabilities in getting any job done.

Mr. Razali, age 60, is a loving grandfather to his four grandchildren and is also RSS Security’s very own Chief Security Officer. Prior to joining the company, Mr. Razali had no experience in security and was also sadly turned down by several other companies that were hiring when he was 58 years old.

Out of all the corporations that Mr. Razali approached, RSS Security was the only one who believed in his capabilities and enthusiasm to work. With vast experiences in handling staff from all walks of life, RSS management did not think twice in giving Mr. Razali a shot to prove that he could actually get things done.

When he started off with on-the-job training as a regular security guard in Kuala Lumpur International Airport ll, he happened to take over the responsibility of filling in for an officer that couldn’t make it to the job site. There, he discovered that he was able to manage and direct the entire team of security guards, which did not go unnoticed by the company’s management staff.

A few months later, Mr. Razali got promoted and his starting position as a guard switched to becoming the Head of Operations. Fast forward to a few years later with his hard work and dedication, Mr. Razali then became the Chief Security Officer. As more project sites and duties were handed to him, he fell more in love with his job and never stopped striving and happily exploring his capabilities.

Even after going through a serious eye operation and was granted several medical leave days, Mr. Razali still chose to show up to work and performed his duties flawlessly.

A great combination of willpower, passion and work ethics is what the team has learnt from Mr. Razali. It can be as simple as volunteering to fill in one’s spot at work, or choosing to explore more areas outside a certain job scope.

While Mr. Razali may have been the best example to show that age is just a number, moving forward, RSS Security will continue to grow stronger with pride and support those who deserve a chance.

You’ll Never Know What’s Ahead If You Give Up Too Fast

At some point in our lives, in the various journeys that we undertake, they’ll always be moments where we feel like giving up. Sometimes we sadly find ourselves giving up even before we start. At other times, most crucially, we tend to give up just before we are about to make a huge break-through– which can be frustrating to exactly anyone.

But in Mr. Baharim’s case, giving up was never an option.

Mr. Baharim Bin Hassan, who was then a regular officer for RSS Security in 2002, is now the Chief Security Officer (CSO) who proudly plays a crucial role in managing personal and private bodyguard assignments for several principals of the company.

When Mr. Baharim, a father of four, first joined RSS Security, he knew that he was in the right place of his career-building journey in the security and safety field. As he humbly started from the bottom, doing general groundwork on the daily, he then got engaged with his mentor, the late Dato’ Hj Osman, and was inspired to continue striving till he reached a high-ranking position in management.

Every now and then when he loses motivation, or encounters a temporary defeat, a quick reminder of his potential is what drives him to succeed as a respected CSO within the company. He never turns down any requests from clients, and he never stops exploring new ways in being better at what he does. The excitement and optimism that he portrays are also two things that people love most about him.

“To those who have just started engaging themselves in an industry that is new to them, try your best to not switch jobs too quickly,” Mr. Baharim said. “You’ll never know your true capabilities or what position you’re bound to achieve if you give up too soon. I’m happy where I am, because I believed in myself– and that’s why young people should too.”

Not only that Mr. Baharim has taught us to never give up, but the qualities that he portrays at work everyday also encourages us to be the best version that we can be– let it be for basic groundwork, or even high-ranking positions in an organization.
